Clean Tech Competition
The Clean Tech Competition is a worldwide research and design challenge for pre-college youth. The program encourages scientific understanding of real-world issues and the integration of environmentally responsible energy sources. Each year, the Clean Tech Competition addresses an issue that is grounded in core technological competency areas and focuses on the next great engineering challenges. The competition is designed to foster a deeper understanding of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) related concepts, recognize outstanding talent, and prepare the next generation of globally competitive innovators. Teams of one to three students between the ages of 15 and 18 with a Team Leader (19 years or older) must register by the deadline listed on their website.
FIRST - LEGO League (FLL)
FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a multinational non-profit organization that sponsors this competiton, which is considered the "little league" of the
FIRST Robotics Competition
. FIRST and the LEGO Company partner to run this program for children 9-14. Using LEGO bricks, participants build a robot and compete in events according to age groups.
FIRST - Robotics Competition
FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a multinational non-profit organization that sponsors this competition, which teams professional and high school students to solve engineering problems. Get a hands-on, inside look at the engineering profession by designing, assembling and testing a robot.
Future City Competetition
"The mission of the National Engineers Week Future City Competition is to provide a fun and exciting educational engineering program for seventh- and eighth-grade students that combines a stimulating engineering challenge with a 'hands-on' application to present their vision of a city of the future." A team of students work with a teacher and an engineer mentor to produce a computer model, a physical model with recycled materials, an essay, and a verbal presentation.
Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF)
Held annually in May, the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) is the world’s largest international pre-college science competition, providing an annual forum for more than 1,700 high school students from over 70 countries, regions, and territories to showcase their independent research and compete for about $5 million in awards in 17 categories.
Junior Science and Humanities Symposia (JSHS) Program - Belin-Blank at University of Iowa (Iowa City, IA)
The Junior Science and Humanities Symposia program seeks to encourage and recognize original research in the STEM fields done by Iowa high school students. Students in grades nine through 12, in the state of Iowa, can submit original research findings for a chance to win scholarships and participate in the Symposia.
Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) International ROV Competition
In this competition, teams of students in grades 5 through college design and build remotely operated vehicles based on an annual theme and compete regionally or internationally depending on their level of sophistication.
MIT THINK Scholars (Cambridge, MA)
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) THINK Scholars is a student-run educational outreach program that makes STEM research and development accessible to high school students who reside in the United States. Using the existing THINK competition as a framework, this group has developed an application process for admission into this new program. Rather than simply recognizing high school students with completed projects, they are now supporting students who wish to implement their ideas. Accepted students will receive seed funding, mentorship from the THINK team, and advice from MIT professors and industry professionals.
SeaPerch International Challenge
SeaPerch is an innovative underwater robotics program that equips teachers and students with the resources they need to build an underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) in an in-school or out-of-school setting. The International Challenge allows teams of middle and high school students to design and build remotely operated underwater vehicles to complete a variety of tasks. Trophies and certificates are awarded.
Solar Car Challenge
The Solar Car Challenge is the top project-based STEM Initiative helping motivate students in Science, Engineering, and Alternative Energy. Teams of high school students design, engineer, build, and the race roadworthy solar cars on the open road and at the Texas Motor Speedway.
Southern Appalachian Science and Engineering Fair (SASEF) (Knoxville, TN)
The Southern Appalachian Science and Engineering Fair is sponsored by The University of Tennessee to develop an outlet for creative energy and analytical skills in our youth. Students in our Senior Division (grades 9-12) compete for two opportunities to represent the SASEF at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. Senior team projects also compete for an opportunity to attend ISEF. Students in the Junior Division (grades 6-8) compete separately for their own awards. The younger students learn a great deal by being involved in the competition each year. Through their experience with the fair, they gain insight that will prove useful in future endeavors.
Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC)
This is the world’s largest student rocket contest and a key piece of the aerospace and defense industry’s strategy to build a stronger U.S. workforce in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Sponsored by the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA) and the National Association of Rocketry (NAR), TARC was created in the fall of 2002 as a one-time celebration of the Centennial of Flight, but by popular demand became an annual program.
Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science (TEAMS)
TEAMS (Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science) is an annual competition for middle and high school students designed to help them discover their potential for engineering. Using science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and 21st century learning skills, students work collaboratively to problem solve real-world engineering challenges.
Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision
Teams of students in grades K-12 submit designs for new technology that benefits society. Member of first- and second- place teams each receive a $10,000 and $5,000 savings bond, respectively, and an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, DC, for an awards ceremony.
Trinity College International Robot Contest
The TCFFHRC is a not-for-profit, international event that embraces and encourages the invention of autonomous, socially-relevant robots from enthusiasts of all ages. The goal of the contest weekend is to promote and inspire creativity and teamwork, with a central focus in understanding and applying STEM subjects while sharing ideas within the robotics community.

Manitoba Science Academy Summer Program (Canada)
This six-week, residential summer program is open to international students with futures in science and engineering. Students (grades 10-12) earn 2 high school credits which are transferable to their State/Province. Gifted youth work as full members of the research team and are involved in the collection and analysis of data. Students must generate a Scientific Report and deliver an oral presentation of the findings of their study to successfully complete the program.
Research Science Institute (RSI) (Massachusetts)
Sponsored by the Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the Research Science Institute (RSI) summer program involves focused content on advanced theory in the sciences, technology, engineering, and research in mathematics (STEM). Held every summer at MIT, RSI is open to students who have completed the third year of high school or the equivalent. Successful applicants will have demonstrated superior scholastic achievement in mathematics, the sciences, and verbal arts. They will have shown the potential for leadership in science and mathematics through their activities in and beyond the classroom. Engineering Minds (Tampa, FL)
Engineering Minds is an engineering education program teaching theory, application, and career skills to intellectually gifted middle and high school students. Saturday, weekly, and summer workshops are offered and include high level technical discussions and videos on topics such as artificial intelligence, quantum mechanics, entrepreneurship, intellectual property, and much more.
Legoland - California Resort (Carlsbad, CA)
Legoland is a fantastic themepark, located in California just north of San Diego. It is not nearly as crowded as Disneyland, and has great rides, shows, and fun activities. The rides include the Dragon Coaster (a mild roller coaster), the TechniCoaster (a fast roller coaster with a big drop and fun turns), and the AquaZone Waveracer (where you might get wet). There is also a great play structure. Children will also have a chance to build, program and control their own robots after creating them from scratch.
Science & Engineering Education - Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (Richland, WA)
This organization has several educational programs for precollege and undergraduate students. Some of the opportunities available include shadowing an employee, being a student research intern or being a student apprentice (must be a Tri-Cities student for many of the programs). Professional development workshops are available for teachers.

Advancing Hispanics/Chicanos & Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) is a society of scientists dedicated to fostering the success of Hispanic/Chicano and Native American scientists—from college students to professionals—in attaining advanced degrees, careers, and positions of leadership. With a 36-year history, SACNAS is comprised of over 20,000 members, partners, and affiliates from a diversity of disciplines, institutions, ethnic backgrounds, and levels along the educational trajectory. SACNAS members are dedicated to giving back through mentorship, peer networks, and professional development, and to engaging in science research and leadership of the highest caliber.
All About Learning
All About Learning harnesses the motivational effects of video game making, renewable energy, and engineering education for students using their LEGO® kits to teach science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) concepts and educational skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, agility and adaptability, curiosity and imagination. All About Learning works with summer camps and school enrichment programs providing classes for kids throughout the United States.
EEME - electronics
EEME makes hands-on project kits paired with an online video curricula to teach 7-12 year old kids electronics. Their goal is to nurture the curiosity & critical thinking kids need for the science, technology, engineering, math (STEM) opportunities of tomorrow.
Innovation World
The mission of Innovation World is to awaken, inspire, facilitate and promote creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship in schools, businesses and individually for every person, of any age, background, ethnicity or economic status. The website includes numerous STEAM resources.
Institute for Broadening Participation (IBP) Pathways to Science
The mission of the Institute for Broadening Participation (IBP) is to increase diversity in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) workforce. Pathways to Science is a project of IBP supporting pathways to the STEM fields: science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This group places particular emphasis on connecting underrepresented groups with STEM programs, funding, mentoring and resources. Use their website to find programs such as undergraduate summer research opportunities, graduate fellowships, postdoctoral positions, as well as resources and materials pertaining to recruitment, retention, and mentoring.
Invent.org
This non-profit provides programs, places, content and other experiences related to invention. There is information on how to get a patent for an invention, resources related to patents and inventions, the National Inventors Hall of Fame and information on programs such as Camp Invention.
InventiveLabs (Beverly, MA)
InventiveLabs is a place to share research and innovative ideas. Teams are selected from applicants who choose a topic based on passion: science, engineering, inventions, fashion & design, the arts, medicine, health care. Inventive Labs offers facilitators, mentors and experts to guide the process. An embedded business incubator helps new start-ups with Angel Funds available.
Society for Science & the Public (SSP)
The mission of the Society for Science & the Public (SSP) is to advance public understanding and appreciation of science. A non-profit based in Washington, D.C., SSP encourages students, parents, teachers, and communities to explore the vast world of science. Through publications, programs, science fairs and scholarship competitions, SSP helps young people utilize and strengthen their knowledge of science, math, and engineering.
Technology Student Association (TSA)
TSA’s curriculum, competitive events, chapter programs and conferences provide academic and personal growth challenges to its members. TSA hosts more than sixty competitions that incorporate communications, construction, manufacturing, transportation, leadership and related technologies. Through the TEAMS Competition, students in grades 7-12 answer multiple choice and short essay questions and complete a hands on design challenge on an annual theme.
The American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE)
The American Society for Engineering Education is a nonprofit member association dedicated to promoting and improving engineering and technology education. ASEE is more than 12,000 deans, professors, instructors, students and industry representatives.

Siemens Foundation PATH Fellowships
Launched in 2016, the Siemens Foundation has partnered with PATH, a leading global health organization to launch the Siemens Foundation PATH Fellowship Program. The program engages science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) students in innovative, hands-on assignments that serve society by accelerating high-impact, low-cost solutions to some of the world’s most pressing health needs. Based in PATH’s Seattle, Washington, office, fellows are provided a meaningful research and laboratory experience and exposed to career opportunities in global health.

"The FAME/UNITE/MERIT Program is designed to increase the effective participation of African American, Hispanic/Latino, and Native American youth in engineering and other science professions. In addition, the program provides accelerated academic enrichment instruction in mathematics, science, computer academic setting resembling a college engineering curriculum. The program also provides professional/personal development workshops, assistance in college selection and information on the engineering profession."

Invention by Design: How Engineers Get from Thought to Thing

Stick and Rudder: An Explanation of the Art of Flying
This book is an excellent resource for someone who wants to become a pilot or for people who want to improve their piloting skills. It tells how to execute a number of maneuvers (which are not aerobatic). Also includes helpful diagrams that explain concepts such as lift, glide, climb, straight and level flight and the turn.
The Art of Electronics
This book emphasizes the methods used by circuit designers: a combination of basic laws, rules of thumb and a large bag of tricks. The editors have responded to the rapid changes in electronics and offer many new tables as well as new and revised topics.
The Encyclopedia of Civil Aircraft
This book describes and has many photos of most civil aircraft built in the world from the 1920's to the present day.
The New Way Things Work
For ages 9-12, this book boasts a richly illustrated 80-page section that wrenches us all (including the wooly mammoth who ambles along with the reader) into the digital age of modems, digital cameras, compact discs, bits and bytes. This book has a variety of cross-sections, showing the inner and outer workings of the machines. The double-page full-color drawings in this encyclopedic volume will have engineering buffs poring over the detailed cross sections of the machinery. There are chapters on cars, trains, building vehicles, tanks, rescue vehicles, record breakers, ships, planes, jets, and space vehicles and instruments. MIT PRIMES (Cambridge, MA)
MIT PRIMES (Program for Research in Mathematics, Engineering and Science for High School Students) is a free, year-long after-school research program serving high school students who live within driving distance from Boston. Program participants work with MIT researchers on exciting unsolved problems in mathematics and computer science.
MIT PRIMES-USA (Cambridge, MA)
PRIMES-USA (Program for Research in Mathematics, Engineering and Science for U.S.A. high school students) is a free, year-long research program for high school juniors from across the United States. PRIMES-USA students will work on original research projects in mathematics provided by MIT faculty. Projects will be mentored by MIT graduate students via the Internet, using software and hardware tools for online collaboration.
Science and Engineering Apprentice Program (SEAP) (Washington, DC)
The Science and Engineering Apprentice Program (SEAP) for high school students places academically talented apprentices with interest and ability in science and mathematics in Department of Defense (DoD) laboratories for eight continuous weeks during the summer. These students work with scientists and engineers who act as mentors. The program offers students a unique and positive experience in their fields of interest, thus encouraging them to pursue careers in science and engineering.

James Dyson Foundation
The James Dyson Foundation focuses on improvement of problem solving skills for young engineers through the use of design and hands on experience. The James Dyson Award is an international design award that celebrates, encourages and inspires the next generation of design engineers. The Award is open to current and recent design engineering students.
Southern California Institute of Architecture (Los Angeles, CA)
SCI-Arc is a center of innovation and one of the nation's few independent architecture schools, offering undergraduate and graduate programs. The school is dedicated to educating architects who will imagine and shape the future.

Ocean Exploration Trust - Science & Engineering Internship Program (Old Lyme, CT)
The Nautilus Science and Engineering Internship Program aims to train undergraduate and graduate students studying ocean science, engineering and video/film in the at-sea environment. Intern positions entail two to five week periods working aboard E/V Nautilus as Data Loggers, ROV Pilots, or Video Engineers. All interns spend their time on Nautilus working with a wide array of scientists, engineers, students and educators. All interns gain experience in communications and leadership, including participating in educational outreach activities, such as live interviews with shore.

George Washington University Pre-College Program (DC)
High school students in the Pre-College Program spend a summer in Washington, D.C., taking advantage of GW's expertise in global development, international relations, public policy and administration, politics, diplomacy, history, biomedical engineering, museum studies and the arts. The program is designed to be intensive and exciting, allowing students to experience the academic rigors of learning in a college environment. They are academically-challenging courses that integrate lectures and seminars with exploration of area organizations.
NASA SHARP Program
Students will do apprentice work with industry- or university-based mathematics, science, and engineering (MSE) professionals and participate in "hands-on" research. They will live on a college campus, participate in enrichment activities and meet other NASA SHARP apprentices from diverse backgrounds. NASA SHARP aims to establish individual working relationships between students and active researchers in aerospace-related fields, and to strengthen the nation's and the government's efforts to recruit and sustain underrepresented students in science and engineering fields. IDEAL Solutions for STEM Acceleration
The Inventory for Decisions about Educational Acceleration and Learning (IDEAL) Solutions for STEM Acceleration is a web-based system that provides student-centered feedback to inform decisions about academic acceleration in STEM fields. The program draws upon their expertise in the area of academic acceleration and have capitalized specifically upon the wide-ranging information available through the Institute for Research and Policy on Acceleration (IRPA). IRPA is part of the Connie Belin & Jacqueline N. Blank International Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Fab Lab
Fab labs provide widespread access to modern means for invention. They began as an outreach project from MIT's Center for Bits and Atoms (CBA). Fab labs have spread from inner-city Boston to rural India, from South Africa to the North of Norway. Activities in fab labs range from technological empowerment to peer-to-peer project-based technical training to local problem-solving to small-scale high-tech business incubation to grassroots research. Projects being developed and produced in fab labs include solar and wind-powered turbines, thin-client computers and wireless data networks, and much more.

PongSat
A PongSat is an experiment that fits inside of a ping pong ball. These ping pong ball 'satellites' are flown to the edge of space by balloon or launched in sounding rockets. The PongSats are then returned to the student. It's an easy and inexpensive way to get students excited about science and engineering.
